Dental Nursing NVQ Level 3

What you will study?

The taught programme covers relevant subjects which includes: The role of the dental nurse, reception, clerical and administrative duties, anatomy and physiology, dental anatomy and physiology, pathology and microbiology, causes and prevention dental disease, sterilisation, instruments and equipment, dental drugs and materials, restorative dentistry, minor oral surgery, anaesthesia, emergencies, dental radiography, orthodontics, and Health and Safety at Work.

How you will learn?

You will be assessed by an NVQ assessor who will visit you in your workplace. The training sessions in College provide you with specialist knowledge that you will need to complete your NVQ and for the externally marked examination.

How you will be assessed?

You will be observed carrying out your daily tasks and duties in your workplace by your NVQ assessor. You will need to keep a record of what you do at work and you will be required to answer written/oral questions. You may be asked to complete projects, case studies and other written assignments.

As part of the assessment process you will also need to take the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) independent knowledge assessment paper.

Entry Requirements?

All candidates must be working as a dental nurse in a dental practice with ideally a minimum of 6 months chairside experience.

Attendance?

You will be expected to complete your NVQ in 18 –24 months. The taught sessions of the course are held at CCN. In addition, students will be expected to attend portfolio workshops regularly throughout their course and revision sessions prior to the independent assessment.

Qualification structure?

Learners will need to complete a total of 11 mandatory units to gain the full NVQ. The units are as follows:

  • Ensure your own actions reduce the risk to health and safety
  • Reflect on and develop your practice
  • Provide Basic Life Support
  • Prepare and maintain environments, instruments, and equipment for clinical dental procedures
  • Offer information and support to individuals on the protection of their oral health
  • Provide chair side support during the assessment of patients’ oral health
  • Contribute to the production of dental radiographs
  • Provide chair side support during the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries, and the restoration of cavities
  • Provide chair side support during the provision of fixed and removable appliances
  • Provide chair side support during non surgical endodontic treatment
  • Provide chair side support during the extraction of teeth and minor surgery

Learners can take units individually as part of a unit route if they do not wish to take the full NVQ (you must complete all 11 units to gain the full NVQ).
