Playwork NVQ Level 2

This qualification is designed for people who work with children in a Playwork setting such as; after school clubs, breakfast clubs, lunch-time supervision, holiday play schemes, nurseries and crèches.

No formal qualifications are required, but participants must be working in an appropriate setting with children and participants must be over 16 years of age. To be eligible for funded places under the Train to Gain scheme individuals must be aged 19 or over, be in employment and have been resident in Europe for the last three years.

Course Aims:

The aim of the course is to provide the level of skills necessary to fulfil the required responsibilities.

Duration Delivery and Content:

How long it takes to complete the course will depend on the individual but on average it takes a year.
There will be some lectures and workshops; however the emphasis is on assessment in the workplace. An assessor is appointed to work with the individuals, guide them through the procedures and assess their skills in the workplace.

The qualification is made up of 6 units; the 4 mandatory units must be completed plus 2 of the optional units.

Mandatory Units- All must be completed.

  • Support relationships in the play environment
  • Work with children and young people to create play spaces and support freely chosen self directed play
  • Contribute to the health, safety security and welfare of children and young people using the play environment
  • Help to improve your own practice and the work of your playwork team

Optional  Units:

  • Contribute to providing food and drink in the play environment
  • Facilitate a specific play opportunity at children’s or young peoples request
  • Support the development of playwork opportunities in the community
  • Contribute to supporting disabled children and young people in the play environment
  • Support work with parents are carers in the play environment
  • Carry out playwork in a school setting
  • Contribute to the administration of the play environment
  • Support children and young people’s travel outside the play environment
