A flexible syllabus, enabling training to be tailored to meet specific needs of employers and their employees. It gives participants within the carpentry industry the opportunity to build and develop more in depth carpentry skills covering subjects such as the manufacturing of joinery products, marking out joinery items from drawings, & producing setting rods, enabling doors, windows, stairs & cabinets to be made accurately.
Who will benefit?
The qualification is designed for those who are currently working in the carpentry/woodwork industry, to support and strengthen their understanding & development.
Entry requirements:
No formal entry requirements, although working within the woodwork/carpentry trade is essential on order for the participant to build their work-based portfolio.
Course Aims:
This is a short, flexible programme to further develop individuals’ skills & knowledge of the industry whilst gaining hands on experience in assembling all joinery items & to identify different timbers. The course covers a wide range of practical construction & trade skills together with the appropriate theory.
Assessment will be by short practical and related knowledge tests for each unit of the course. When a given number of units have been successfully completed, an NVQ is awarded. Each candidate must complete all the mandatory units, plus three optional units.
Mandatory Units:
- Conform to general workplace safety
- Conform to efficient work practices
- Move and handle resources
Optional Units:
- Install first fixing components
- Install second fixing components
- Erect structural carcassing components
- Maintain non-structural carpentry work
- Set up and use circular saws
Progression:
- Carpentry and Joinery NVQ Level 3
